There are many moist heat pads on the market today. Each is different in construction, appearance, and the manner in which they produce moisture. The Roberts Hydro Thero Pad is an electric moist heat pad designed to produce its own moisture automatically. Professional moist heat treatments are conveniently applied wherever there is an electrical outlet. The Hydro Thero Pad provides "fomentation" treatments which are intense, intermittent applications of moist heat. These soothing treatments temporarily relieve minor aches and pains caused by a variety of ailments.

Electric Moist Heat Pads

Electric models are convenient because of a built-in heat source and the heat intensity can be controlled. There are two main types: those that produce moisture with a wet sponge and those that do so automatically such as the Roberts Hydro Thero Pad.

Wet Sponge

This method produces moist warmth because the wet sponge acts as an insulator between pad and body. Moist warmth does not offer the therapeutic benefits as a fomentation treatment.

Automatic

This method, employed by the Roberts Hydro Thero Pads, generates penetrating hot moist heat, which stimulates the body's own natural healing process. Moisture from the surrounding atmosphere is trapped in a special cotton flannel cover. This hot moist heat is then transferred to the body for a soothing treatment.

Nonelectric Moist Heat Pads

These pads require an external heat source- usually a pot of boiling water! The heat cannot be controlled and there is the mess and danger associated with boiling water.

How is the Roberts pad different from other heating pads?

The Roberts pad is not a heating pad. It is a Hydro Thero Pad. The difference is that the Roberts pad is constructed differently than a typical heating pad. Metal strips are surrounded by heater wire in the body of the pad. As these strips heat up they produce moist heat. The moisture comes from the air.

What is fomentation?

Fomentation is an intensely hot application of properly controlled moist heat to the body to ease minor aches and pains. It is a series of brief applications of intense moist heat alternated with short cooling periods over a total time of twenty to thirty minutes.

How does fomentation help?

Moisture permits heat to penetrate deeply, for greater effectiveness than dry heat alone. Moist heat penetrates, soothes, and helps the body's naturally recuperative circulation work more efficiently and effectively by influencing the oxygen consumption and affecting the movement of blood.

What are the benefits of fomentation?

Fomentation is beneficial to relieve pain from tension-induced muscular aches in the neck, sciatica, and neuralgia.

Fomentation is excellent for the discomfort of arthritis, rheumatism and sciatica.

Fomentation gives soothing relief for pain or sinus congestion, chest, cold, virus ailments, chills, bronchial, and menstrual cramps and indigestion.
